Hydrogen
The department’s Hydrogen division is responsible for accelerating the production, domestic use and export of hydrogen in Queensland. To achieve this, we’re committed to working collaboratively with the private sector and other government agencies to foster hydrogen project investment and skills development.
Queensland’s combination of significant renewable energy resources, world-class infrastructure such as ports, and long-standing trading partnerships, position Queensland to be a leader in the production, domestic use and export of renewable hydrogen.
A hydrogen industry in Queensland will create highly skilled jobs, open up a new export market for the state, and play a critical role in helping us reach our net zero emissions target by 2050, particularly in hard to abate sectors. Our hydrogen industry will see us well placed to use our plentiful resources to help our trading partners achieve their own decarbonisation objectives.
Since 2019, the Queensland Government has committed more than $60 million, as part of the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy 2019-2024, to help stimulate the hydrogen industry and future hydrogen jobs in Queensland.
In 2021, the Queensland Hydrogen Taskforce was established to focus on delivering a globally attractive destination for hydrogen investment.
Our key priorities and responsibilities are to:
- lead the development of strategic policy in relation to hydrogen growth, as a part of Queensland’s energy transformation and future economic growth
- contribute to national policy development around hydrogen, and support attraction of national funding for Queensland projects
- identify and develop opportunities for domestic use of hydrogen, including by government agencies
- lead the regulatory framework review to facilitate the safe and streamlined integration of hydrogen into the broader energy sector
- work with government owned corporations in the energy sector around their involvement in hydrogen
- work with industry and researchers to foster innovation in the hydrogen sector and to encourage the use of Queensland innovation in the sector
- lead community engagement on hydrogen and related issues.
